Obituary

William A. Moon, Sr., of East Street passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at his home with his loving family at his side. He was 89. Born on December 28, 1924 in Schaghticoke, son of the late Ernest L. and Helen (Feeney) Moon. He is the husband of the late Evelyn (Jarvis) Moon who passed away in 1997. After graduating from Hoosic Valley School, Bill entered the Army in February 1943, graduated from Med Tech School and went to Europe with 137 Gen. Hosp. and 24 Evac Hosp., and was discharged in April of 1946 with Tech 4 rating. Bill ran the Valley Theater, worked for Hoosic Valley School as a bus driver and custodian and worked the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds as electrician for several years. He retired from GE Waterford as a maintenance electrician in 1987. He was especially proud of his service to the Schaghticoke Fire Department serving 37 years as chief and served 5 years as Village Mayor. He is a life member of the NYS Fire Chiefs, Rensselaer Co. Fire Chiefs and Schaghticoke Fire Department. Survivors include his children, JoAnn (Kenneth) MacDougall of Valley Falls and William (Shelley) Moon of Schaghticoke, son-in-law Michael Hughes of Stillwater, grandchildren, Amy (Seth) Peterson, Ken MacDougall, Jr., Chelsea (Bill) Russell, Michael Hughes, Jr., William Hughes and Cory Moon. Also survived by 3 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. He is predeceased by his daughter, Jean Hughes and a great granddaughter. Relatives and friends may call from 2-5pm on Sunday, February 23, 2014 at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 173 Main Street, Schaghticoke. Funeral Mass will be conducted at 9:00am on Monday at Transfiguration Parish, Route 40. Burial with military honors will be in St. John's Cemetery in the spring.
