Schaghticoke, Rensselaer Co.
Thomas W. Sawyer of Schaghticoke passed away Friday, March 24 at Samaritan Hospital. He was 84.
Born on June 4, 1932, in Broadalbin, the son of Mary (Wonsick) and Thomas S. Sawyer. At the age of 20, Tom left his familys farm and business (Sawyers Dance Hall) and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served as an MP stationed in Germany, earning several commendations. On March 10, 1954, while home on leave, he married Joan Dickinson. They recently celebrated their 63rd anniversary.
After his service, Tom and Joan settled in her hometown of Schaghticoke. He began work at GE in Waterford, eventually retiring after 38 years in 1996. In 1961 they moved into the home he built for them, where they raised their family.
Tom was an avid outdoorsman. When his family was young, they spent many summer vacations camping and waterskiing at Fish Creek Ponds in Lake Clear, NY. Throughout his life, he enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as cutting firewood, and could often be found helping family and friends cut and split theirs. He also kept a very large and immaculate vegetable garden. He enjoyed getting together with family and friends, and his stories and sense of humor will be missed.
He is survived by his wife Joan (Dickinson); his daughter Karen (Duane) Moore of Valley Falls; his son Tom, Jr. (Colleen Ryan) of Valley Falls; his daughter Susan (Jon) Andrews of Greenwich; his daughter Maria Casey of Troy; his brother Dick (Freda) Sawyer of Rock City Falls; his sister Margaret Mooney of Broadalbin and his sister-in-law Peggy Sawyer of Broadalbin; thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother John Sawyer and his sister Catherine DeFoe.
Calling hours will be held at Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 173 Main Street in Schaghticoke, NY on Monday from 4-7 pm. Funeral service to be held at the funeral home, Tuesday at 10:30 am, followed by burial at Saratoga National Cemetery.
