Thomas J. Messore, Sr. "Hardware" passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, December 24, 2021. He was 97.
Born in Mechanciville on April 29, 1924, son of Pasquale and Alessandra (Roman) Messore. He was the husband of the late Frances (Tanner) Messore.
Tom was inducted into the US Navy on February 3, 1943 and following Naval Training he volunteered to join the Armed Guard and following Gunnery School was assigned to the MT Norlys. After surviving the notorious Murmansk Run to Russia, he was reassigned to other ships such as the SS Bulk, the SS William G. Lee, the SSA Mitchell Palmer and the SS Laura Keene. He was honorably discharged on January 19, 1946. After his service in the US Navy he went on to work for Westvaco Paper Mill in Mechanicville for 30 plus years and then as a vehicle detailer for New Country for several years. Tom was a past fire chief for the Stillwater Fire Department and member of the Stillwater Rescue Squad. He enjoyed bowling in the Mechanicville-Stillwater Bowling League where he would serve as treasurer, he was a member of the Sons of Italy and the American Legion Post 490, Stillwater and was an honorary life member of the Mechanicville Area Seniors. "Hardware" as he was known to many- loved bocce ball, painting and working with his hands.
Survivors include his children, Donna Halse of Saratoga Lake, Thomas (Mary) Messore, Jr. of Stillwater, Catherine (William) Werber of Stillwater and Mark (Judith) Messore of Lake Luzerne, his grandchildren, Jessica (Jason) Robinson, Seth (Corey) Webster, Nathan (Jalene) Webster, Matthew (Dorothy) Sheehan, Angela Messore, Allessandra (Chris) Skinner, Kailee Messore, Lindsey (Ryan) Halse and Markus (Colleen) Messore as well as 9 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his wife, Frances and his parents, he is predeceased by his four siblings.
A special heartfelt thank you to Sue Cukrovany, Ray Cordani, Jack Messore, Chippo Rocco, Chipper Russom and his best friend and son-in-law Bill for their love, compassion and care of Tom.
Relatives and friends may call from 4:00-6:00pm on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 729 Hudson Avenue, Stillwater. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, December 30th at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Saratoga National Cemetery with military honors. Mask use and social distancing required at all services regardless of vaccination status.
