VanVranken, Spencer “Jay” Stillwater, Saratoga County

Spencer “Jay” VanVranken of Hudson Avenue passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2026 at home. He was 95 years old.

Born in Albany on July 3, 1931, son of the late Henry and Virginia (VanWie) VanVranken. He is the husband of the late Anne Patricia VanVranken who he married on August 27, 1955.

Mr. VanVranken was honorably discharged from the US Navy in 1955 following his service in the Korean War. During his service on the USS Kimberly, he traveled around the world. He worked at General Electric and went on to work for over 30 years for NYTEL, retiring in 1992. Jay was an active member of the community and recognized as Stillwater’s Citizen of the Year in 2001. He was a member of the Montgomery Masonic Lodge in Stillwater, managing their concession stand at the Schaghticoke Fair for several years. He was a member and held various offices with the Stillwater School Board, the Stillwater Library, the Stillwater Union Cemetery, the Northeast Woodworkers’ Association and was a member of Stillwater United Church where he enjoyed singing with their choir. He was a 50 plus year member of the Racing City Chorus and was proud to have visited all 50 states.

Survivors include his children, Richard (Sheila Kanaley) VanVranken of Mays Landing, NJ, Michael (Lynn Vanderhoek) VanVranken of Jamesville, Laura (Robert) Macey of Stillwater and Timothy (Beth) VanVranken of Catonsville, MD. His grandchildren; Dana, Ian, Annalise, Mackenzie, Eleanor, Gerrit, Margaret, Janna, Gavin and great grandchildren Bryce, Gavin and McKenna Jo. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, he is predeceased by his siblings Virginia (VanVranken) Stone and George VanVranken.

Visiting hours will be on Thursday, October 8, 2026 from 5-7:00pm at the Stillwater United Church, Hudson Avenue, Stillwater. Burial with military honors will be in the Saratoga National Cemetery on Friday, October 9 at 10:30am (those wishing to join are asked to be at the cemetery entrance at 10:15am sharp). A memorial service will follow in the Stillwater United Church at 11:30 with fellowship to follow in the fellowship hall downstairs.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Stillwater United Church or the Stillwater Library in loving memory of Jay VanVranken.
