Obituary

Colonie, Albany County Ruth Elizabeth Hathaway, long time Stillwater resident, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peters Hospital. She was 86. Born in Rutland, VT on April 30, 1930, daughter of the late Margaret (Crapeau) Stone and Clifton Tyrrell. She is the widow of Kenneth C. Hathaway, Sr. Ruth spent her life serving both her family and community. Her love for life and natural curiosity for learning were evident in everything she did. Her early community/work experiences were in the Home Bureau, 4-H, the Hathaway Drive-In, and Browns Beach. She was the first female school bus driver for the Stillwater Central School System, where she worked for more than 30 years. She was a strong union activist for CSEA both in the Capital District and statewide, serving as President of the Stillwater CSEA unit and Executive Board member for the CSEA Saratoga County Educational Local. She served as Town Clerk for the Town of Stillwater and as a first responder for the Stillwater Ambulance. She was a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star Upton Chapter #679, holding many offices, including its highest office, Grand Matron. She was a member of Amaranth, and regularly attended church as a member of the Stillwater Christian Fellowship. She loved cooking/baking and spending time with her immediate and extended family. Later in life, her grandchildren were sources of both joy and pride. Survivors include her children, Kenneth (Diane) Hathaway, Jr., of Malta, Susan (Jerry) Rousselle of Malta, Kathy Martel of Saratoga Springs, S. William Hathaway of Saratoga Springs, Lorraine (Kim) Hathaway of Albany, Richard (Laurie) Hathaway of Queensbury and Richard (Velma) Bleau of North Dighton, MA, her siblings, Gladys Tifft, William Stone, and Linda Deyette as well as several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her son, Thomas Hathaway and her siblings, Clifton Tyrrell, James Tyrrell, Vernon Tyrrell, Patricia Hughes, Ralph Stone and Stanley Stone. Calling hours will be from 4-7:00pm on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 729 Hudson Avenue, Stillwater. Funeral service will follow at 7:00pm in the funeral home.
