Ronald J. Lyon January 27, 1944 to July 4, 2023 How do you sum up a forty eight years of memories and accomplishments about Ron Lyon in a few short paragraphs? I first met Ron while I was working at the Saratoga Hospital in August of 1975. At that time, he was working full time for The Saratoga Springs Police Department and was working a second job as the head of security as the hospital but I had never met him. It was midnight. He was standing outside the front door of the hospital wearing torn blue jeans, an army flack jacket and sunglasses. We married on August 8, 1980. There are so many stories I can tell about his time with the Saratoga Springs Police Department. The time he was directing traffic at the intersection of Union Ave and Circular St. and I was cleaning fish in the median while I watched him do his thing. There was the time that he and his Best man were in a motor vehicle accident and Ron refused to go in an ambulance. There was the time he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident on Union Ave. and a Pinkerton guard saved him by pulling him out of traffic when he landed in the middle of the road during racing season. Then there was the time he arrested the Chief of Police for a hit and run accident. During his years of service at the Police Dept, he served in the Detective Division, served as a motorcycle patrol officer and as a sniper in the SWAT team. Later he was promoted to SWAT Commander. He retired in 1989 as a Lieutenant. Prior to retirement, he began working for Mary Lou Whitney as her personal body guard and Head of Security at her Saratoga estate. After his retirement, he continues working for Mrs. Whiney until 1997. He then attended BOCES in Saratoga Springs and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. During his nursing career, he worked for Dr. Maurice OConnell and later at Baptist Retirement Center and Albany Medical Center Hospital. He then attended and graduated from the Sarasota School of Massage Therapy in Sarasota Florida. His mission was to help people relieve their pain and stress in a way nursing could not do. After moving to Galway, New York, Ron lead a life of service. He was elected the Mayor of the Village of Galway in 1997. Ron later joined the Galway Volunteer Fire Company. In 2007, he was named Rookie of the year attending 201 alarms. He began the Fire Police Division and later becoming the Chaplain. In 2014, he was awarded the Presidents award for helping the company raise their professional reputation for the town and the community. In 2018 he was awarded the Chiefs award for his service to the Fire Company. Together we were a force. He gave me the nick-name Pooh. Ron was born in Aquarius and I was born in Libra. We made the perfect couple. Libras want things to go smoothly. I could spend hours or days weighing the pros and cons of even the smallest decisions. Libras are also very level headed and can be sought after for practical solutions. Aquarians have a deep connection to community: They are rooted in teamwork, collaboration, and the concept of the "greater good," Aquarians are determined to make a powerful difference in the world. And so it was with Ron. We owned a restaurant in Saratoga Springs for several years. Together we bought an old abandoned church in Galway and spent 3 years restoring it. We opened our business A Wedding in the Country in 1992. I was the brains and he was the brawn. Ron could tell a story like no one else. It was the Irish in him. He knew how to set the scene and make his audience crave the next part of the tale. He was quite the talker. Being Irish, he loved his potatoes. It didnt matter whether it was French fries, Hash browns, baked potatoes, or potato salad but most of all it was mashed potatoes made with mayonnaise, milk and dripping with butter. Ron served in the Navy on the USS Aldebaran in the Atlantic fleet and USS Hazelwood. He was Honorably discharged in 1967. After his discharge, he joined the Glens Falls Police Department. From there he became the Chief of Police in Bolton Landing. In 1969, he joined the Saratoga Springs Police Department. Ron is survived by his sons, Zachary and Mark, his oldest brother, Edward, his sister Gwendolyn Cicotte, his grandsons Jason Lyon, Shawn Lyon and Brad Lyon. His nieces and nephews, Deborah Lyon, Jeanie Lou Kramer, Edward Lyon Jr., Warren Cicotte, Jeff Cicotte, Bonnie Cicotte Derocco, Arlene Pearson, Darlene Aliff and Harold Lyon, III He was proceeded in death by his parents, Harold S. and Florence Lyon, his son, Michael, his brother Harold, and his sister, Eleanor Osborne. I have no idea what is ahead. I am still waking to the realization that he will not be with me to hug me when I need one, dance with me, or walk through life with me in the physical world. I know he is with me in spirit. His last words to me were: We will get through this together. I love you. "How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard." During this time the Fire Department will be rendering their service. Funeral service will be at 12 noon on Friday July 21, 2023 at the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, Inc., 2034 West Street, Galway.
