Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County Robert A. "Bob" Dunbar of Schaghticoke passed away at home with his family by his side on Friday, May 10, 2019, after a brief illness. Bob was born in Watervliet at home to the late Floyd A. Dunbar and Eva (Malthaner) Dunbar Harper on January 2, 1942. He graduated from Heatley High School in Green Island in 1959, and joined the US Air Force later that year, as a mechanic and part of the in-flight refueling crew for Strategic Air Command. Following his honorable discharge in 1962 he worked as an auto mechanic, notably for Knowles Pontiac in Troy, for Smith Pontiac in Latham for more than 25 years achieving master mechanic status, and also for Action Chevrolet in Troy. He married the former Susan Moss in 1963. They had 3 children, and moved to Schaghticoke in 1972 where they have resided for the last 47 years. During this time, he was a member of the Hoosic Valley Volunteer Rescue Squad for more than 20 years, rising to the rank of captain. Bob taught first aid courses during his time with the rescue squad. He also coached little league baseball. Bob enjoyed roller skating at Guptills, hunting, fishing, camping, woodworking, and bird watching. He was a fan of the New York Yankees his entire life. He loved nature and all furry creatures. In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his 3 children, Cassandra Dunbar (James Martin) of Mineville, Brenda Tompkins (Rob) of Mechanicville, and Bob Dunbar (Michelle) of Fonda. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Megan Peason (Will), Brian Loucks, Kristin Lewis (Patrick Beaudoin), Joshua Lewis (Amy), Sarah Harris (Kyle), and Stephen and Christopher Dunbar. Bob also is survived by 6 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and their families; sister Shirley Dunbar of Broadalbin; brother Ronald Dunbar (Mary) of Peoria, Arizona; sister-in-law Patricia Lampron (Roger) of Saratoga; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and fur babies Emmi and Samson. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his step-parents Eileen R. Dunbar and Earl Harper, brothers Wayne and Kenneth Dunbar, and sister Dianne LaPlante and brother-in-law Ed LaPlante. Calling hours will be held on Monday, May 13, 2019 from 6-8 PM at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 319 Park Avenue, Mechanicville, NY 12118. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 14th at 10 AM from the funeral home at the Mechanicville location. Burial will follow in Albany Rural Cemetery.
