Obituary

Richard Henderson

Richard (Dick) Ashworth Henderson, 84, of Waterford, NY, passed away peacefully at home on July 6, 2026, with his loving life partner Karen and faithful pets by his side.

He was born on March 27, 1942, in Lawrence, MA, to the late Clifford Ashworth and Frances Olive (Millikin) Henderson. He was also predeceased by his sister Margret (Peggy) Crawford.

Dick served his country honorably as a Marine and was a devoted protector of his sisters. He was a master mechanic and craftsman. Ever curious, he was frequently called on by his friends to solve complex problems. Dick operated the locks for the Erie Canal where he enjoyed greeting travelers from all over the world. He was an automotive enthusiast who expertly restored many vehicles, including his prized 1934 Ford pickup truck.

Known as "Poppy Chicken" to his friends, a nickname given to him by his granddaughters. Dick was a compulsive flirt with a heartwarming smile and radiant blue eyes. He valued his friends greatly and was generous with his time and resources. He felt great pride in his sons and considered them one of his greatest life accomplishments. He maintained his keen wit and Irish humor all the way to the end. When asked by Hospice if he had any allergies, he quipped, "matrimony."

Dick is survived by his life partner Karen Carmody, sisters, Jane Kurani (Ramesh) of Burlington VT, Deb Henderson (Bobby Guerin) of Troy NY and sons, Richard A. Henderson (Kim DeFazio) of Schaghticoke, NY, James P. Henderson (Darcie) of Schaghticoke, Bryan D. Henderson (Jill) of Brunswick NY. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Suzanne Henderson Lovely of Schaghticoke, grandchildren Jamie Henderson of Schaghticoke and Kristen Henderson of Houston TX, and great granddaughter Blakely Addison Henderson.

The family would like to express their gratitude for the wonderful support provided by his good friends Laurie and Kevin Jesman, the Stratton VA, Center Well, Capital District Home Care, and Hospice.

In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the VA or Hospice.
