Smith Gansevoort, Saratoga County, New York
Kenneth Gordon Smith, age 92, of Orange Lane, Gansevoort and formerly of Valley Falls, Schaghticoke, and Schroon Lake, died peacefully after a short illness.
Ken was born on September 18, 1925 in Schaghticoke, son of the late Margaret (Hawley) Smith and Paul A. Smith. He graduated early from high school so that he could enter the U.S. Navy, serving honorably from 1944-1946. Only 18, he was part of the LST 310 crew that delivered men and munitions to Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion, D-Day, June 6, 1944. After discharge from the Navy, Ken worked at Westvaco, until it closed in 1971. Retrained in HVAC, he served northeastern NY and Vermont as a refrigeration technician for the former Grand Union, retiring in 1996.
Ken is predeceased by brothers John and William, sisters Hazel Smith, Margaret Clum, Helen Stalter, Dorothy Smith and Barbara Daurio, mother of his children Barbara (Slocum) Smith, son Larry Murphy Jr., son-in law Robert E. Wheeler, a great grandson and a great great grandson.
He is survived by his cherished wife Geraldine H. (Gaudette) Smith, daughters Robbin Stokes, Noel (William) Ireland and Allison Wheeler, sons Charles C. (Michele) Smith and Robert Murphy, beloved sister Wilma Warren, daughter-in-law Diane Murphy, sister-in-law Louise Patenaude, 16 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren and dozens of nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call on Friday, March 16, 2018 at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Home, 729 Hudson Avenue, Stillwater from 10:00 11:30 a.m. with funeral service at 11:30 in the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
