Karen Fentress Horton of Calhoun Drive passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 23, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 69.

Born on January 16, 1955 in Norfolk, VA, daughter of the late Robert Lee and Nancy (Daughtry) Fentress. She is the wife of Steven E. Horton who she married on October 8, 1983.

Karen was a graduate of Old Dominion University, class of 1977 with a bachelor's in psychology. She was passionate about her career and excelled in every capacity, never missing a day's work.

Karen worked for 49 years in the flour industry for Cargill, Horizon Milling and Ardent Mills. Beginning in 1974 for Cargill before moving to Horizon Milling in 1984 Karen held a role as national sales manager for 24 years. For over two decades, Karen was a devoted member of the National Association of Flour Distributors and in 2015 she was elected as the first female Board Director to represent the Flour Millers and served on the Board for 7 years. Karen always remained positive, steadfast, focused and resilient through global pandemics, inflationary changes, market shifts and supply chain challenges. She was respected and loved by her many friends and colleagues always caring, warm and wise, she was always willing to take on any task and stayed so positive through her long cancer journey. When Karen retired in June 2023, she left behind a legacy of putting her customers first - many of whom she saw as close friends.

Through her tireless efforts with the American Cancer Society she was named our 2013 Hero of Hope at the ACS Evening of Hope recognition night and in 2021 she was the first ever Making Strides Against Breast Cancer honoree and was recognized with the Champion of Hope Award. Since she started her fundraising journey in 2006 she raised $500,000 and was ranked in the top 20 fundraisers for 9 straight years.

Karen loved the beach and family vacations to where the sun and sand were present. She delighted in celebrating holidays and birthdays. Karen enjoyed dancing, shopping and had a competitive spirit both in work, fundraising and even playing games.

Survivors in addition to her beloved husband Steve include her loving children, Brittany Horton of Malta and Matthew (Maite) Horton of Saratoga Springs. She is "Geepy" to her adoring grandchildren Francisco "Ceko" and Nicolás "Nico". She is also survived by her sister Robin Edgeman of Seattle as well as other extended family and numerous friends.

Relatives and friends may call from 1-3:00pm on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at the Presbyterian United Church, 165 Main Street, Schaghticoke. A memorial service will be held in the church at 3:00pm with Pastor Lynne Hardy officiating.
