Obituary

John Tom Thomas Whalen Stillwater, Saratoga County John Tom Whalen of High Street and lifelong resident of Stillwater, passed away on December 25, 2015 at the Albany Medical Center. He was 91. Born on January 7, 1924 in Stillwater, son of the late John and Mary (Groncniak) Whalen. He is the husband of the late Noreen Rich. Tom was a graduate of the Stillwater Central School, class of 1942. He went on to graduate from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy and was a dedicated member of their Alumni Association. He served during WWII and traveled around the world and was discharged as a Lieutenant. Tom was a licensed nautical diesel mechanic and worked in the maintenance department at General Electric for 35 years. He was a member of the Arvin Hart Fire Company and a member of the American Legion Post 490, Stillwater. Recently, Tom traveled to Washington DC to tour the WWII Memorial with other fellow veterans. He enjoyed the comfort of his home which he built and the company of his friends and neighbors and spending time with his family. He especially loved a good loaf of bread and an afternoon on his porch. In later years he loved riding his scooter around Stillwater visiting his friends. Survivors include his son, David (Elizabeth) Whalen of Saratoga Springs, his daughter Nancy (Stephen) Crawford of North Kingstown, RI, his sister, Ruth Wilson of Wichita, KS, his grandchildren Jamie Whalen of Saratoga Springs, Kerry Branick of Rockville, MD, Brendan Crawford of Newport, RI and Caitlin Crawford of Boston, MA. Also, one great granddaughter Clare Branick. Relatives and friends may call from 5-7pm on Tuesday, December 29 at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 729 Hudson Avenue, Stillwater. Funeral Mass will be conducted at 12 noon on Wednesday, December 30 at All Saints on the Hudson Church, Stillwater. Burial will be in the family plot in St. Peters Cemetery, Stillwater.
