Obituary

Jennifer Ann (Smith) Sweeney, our beloved "Jenny" was received into the loving arms of her savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 due to complications while being treated at Cape Fear Memorial Hospital in North Carolina. She was 71 years old.

Jenny was born on March 19, 1955 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, daughter of Helen L. Smith and the late Warren D. Smith. She is the wife of Daniel Sweeney.

Jenny was a graduate of Greenwich High School, class of 1973. She moved to North Carolina and married the love of her life, Dan. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Good Hope Hospital in Erwin, North Carolina where she was the nursing supervisor. She shared her passion for nursing by teaching at Fayetteville Technical Community College, shaping many students to become nurses.

Jenny and Dan loved vacationing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and bought a mountain home in Fancy Gap, Virginia. She was intensely involved with the Soul Sisters of the River Community Baptist Church, where she was an active member. She was also active with Sky View Baptist Church in Fancy Gap, Virginia where she helped prepare meals for funerals and shut ins. Jenny was happiest when she went on long road trips with Dan on his motorcycle, traveling all over and enjoying retirement.

Survivors in addition to her beloved mother, Helen and love of her life Dan include her children of whom she was immensely proud of, Ricky Pettigrew for being an A 1 carpenter and Jason Sweeney for being a paramedic for Fort Bragg military base, they are both of North Carolina; her loving grandchildren, Jimmy Pettigrew, Bryan Pettigrew and Elizabeth (Tyler) Carlstrom and a great granddaughter Megan Elizabeth Carlstrom. Also survived by her siblings, Daniel (Mary Ann) Smith of Cambridge, NY, Georgia (late Wayne) Gregory of Pemberton, NJ, Virginia (Dale) Vredenburg of Valley Falls, NY and Matthew (Tammy) Smith of Davis West Virginia, dear friends Herman and Tammy Gentry and Mike Nash and Marion Ryan as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be held on July 10, 2026 at 6:00pm at The River Church, 777 Elliot Bridge Road, Fayetteville, North Carolina 28311.

Visiting hours will be from 10-11:30am on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 173 Main Street, Schaghticoke. A memorial service will be held in the funeral home immediately after visiting.
