Jason F. Wheeler, Sr. of Schaghticoke, beloved husband of the late Evelyn I. Wheeler (deceased May 18th,2011), passed away November 18, 2011 at his residence with his family by his side. He was 85. Jason was born on December 29, 1925 in Troy, NY, the son of the late Florence Brisbois Johnsen, the late Jason R. Wheeler and his stepfather, the late Trygve Johnsen. As a teenager he enjoyed attending local square dances, where he met his future wife, Evelyn. He was a Schaghticoke High School graduate and briefly attended Siena College until he decided to farm full time on his mothers turkey farm (Johnsens Turkey Farm) on Hayes Road in Schaghticoke. Evelyn and Jason married on February 1st, 1948 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Melrose. They started their own family on their farm on Bell Road in Schaghticoke. In the 1960s the couple moved their residence to Hayes Road and eventually moved to Easton in 1978, until their deaths. After Jasons farming career, he spent time as an armed Pinkerton guard, worked at Behr-Manning/Norton Co. for 16 years and GE Silicones for 16 years, retiring in 1993. Throughout his life he kept his passion for model planes and farming. He took flying lessons as a young man and was a lifetime NRA member. He and Evelyn spent years camping and boating with their children on Lake Bomoseen, Fish Creek and Saratoga Lake. Jason also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his teenage sons. He was instrumental in forming a Bantam bowling league at the Schaghticoke Bowl where he was a bowling instructor in the 1960s. Evelyn and he were members of the Sunday Night Hilltoppers bowling league at the Hilltop Bowl in the 1960s and 70s. During this same time, Jason developed a passion for CB radios, spending much time talking on his base and mobile radios. In his later years, including retirement, Jason enjoyed RVing with Evelyn, relatives, children and grandchildren. Jason tended to the vegetable garden at home and helped Evelyn with her flower gardens. His quiet time included watching old westerns, reruns of Hee Haw, the Lawrence Welk Show and especially enjoyed The Big Joe Polka Show on RFD TV. Jason lost his will when Evelyn passed and joined her six months to the day of her passing. The family gives special thanks to Jasons home health aide Tammy Williams and Washington County Hospice for helping to keep him comfortable during his final days. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, stoic nature and the love he has shown his family. Jasons family will deeply miss him, but they have resolve in knowing that he and Evelyn are together again. Survivors include his five sons, Jason Wheeler, Jr. of Easton, Jeffery and wife Holly Wheeler of Poestenkill, Stephen Wheeler of Cherry Hill, NJ, Christian Wheeler of New Bedford, MA and Leslie Wheeler of Johnsonville, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also, two half sisters, Joan Wheeler MacDonald of Troy and Barbara DAostino of Latham and Aunt, Myrtle Cafarella of East Greenbush. In addition to his parents, Jason is predeceased by a baby sister who died after birth and his brother Robert D. Wheeler who passed in 1985. Relatives and friends may call on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 from 10am-12pm at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 173 Main Street, Schaghticoke. Funeral services will follow visiting at the funeral home at 12 noon. Burial will follow at the family plot in Elmwood Cemetery, Schaghticoke. The family has extended the invitation to family and friends, immediately after the burial, for a lunch buffet at Hendersons Restaurant, 88 South Main St., Schaghticoke.
