Obituary

Mechanicville - Saratoga County George W. Arnold, Sr. of South Main Street, passed away on April 12, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital. He was 91. Born on August 30, 1921 in Mechanicville to Herbert Patrick and Bertha (Bolton) Arnold. He married the love of his life, Josephine (Palmer) Arnold on April 27, 1952. George attended Mechanicville High School where he was an athlete in basketball, football and track. He worked at Westvaco Paper Mill and after the devastating events of Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Navy at age 20 in 1941, serving in the South Pacific Campaign as a gunner aboard the USS Nashville. After his tour of duty he was honorably discharged and re-entered the workforce as Westvaco and also worked part time as a patrol officer serving beside his brother Henry C. Arnold, Chief of Police in Mechanicville. After the closing of Westvaco Plant he worked at General Electric in Schenectady for the next 17 years. He was also a referee/umpire and official for those years. George was defined by his family as a warm and caring son, father and grandfather, always concerned for the betterment of his family. In asking George how he was, he would reply '6, 2 and 1 even'. He will be missed by all. In addition to his wife, Josephine, George is survived by his three sons, George Arnold, Jr. of Greenwich, CT, Herbert Arnold of Shushan and Robert Arnold of Agoura Hills, CA, four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call from 9-11am on Monday, April 15 at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 319 Park Avenue, Mechanicville. Service will be conducted at 11:00. Burial with military honors will be at the family plot in Hudson View Cemetery. Online remembrances may be made at www.chasesmithfamily.com
