Francis "Fran" J. Sweeney of Broadway passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2024 at Albany Medical Center. He was 85.

Born on May 15, 1939, son of the late Francis V. and Marguerite (Cunningham) Sweeney. He is the husband of Sharon L. (Phinney) Sweeney.

Fran served in the National Guard from 1959-1965. He worked as a Foreman at LaRose RF Systems from 1960-1991 and then was as a Mechanicville Water Treatment Plant Operator from 1992-2001.

He was a member of the Mechanicville-Stillwater Elks Lodge 1403. He loved being with family especially gathering for the holidays and vacations at the Dude Ranch in Warrensburg. Fran enjoyed the long walks, casinos, puzzles, strategic games and adhered to a strict regiment when it came to snacks and meals. He will be missed.

Survivors in addition to his wife, Sharon include his children, Michele A. (Anthony) Saunders of Stillwater, Michael F. Sweeney, Christine L. Sweeney both of Mechanicville and Sandra L. (Robert) Manny of Niskayuna, grandchildren Anthony F. Saunders (Karah), Abbey G. Saunders (Eric), Lucas P. Higgins and Tyler S. Higgins as well as his great grandchildren Sophia A. Webley, Emma M. Saunders and Violet J. Donovan. Also survived by his sister Mary Alice Russo and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his brothers William Sweeney and James Sweeney.

Calling hours will be from 4-7:00pm on Thursday, October 10, 2024 at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 319 Park Ave., Mechanicville. Funeral service will be held on Friday at 11:00am with burial to follow in Hudson View Cemetery.
