Obituary

Evelyn I. Wheeler of Sarles Ferry Road, North Easton, passed away on May 18, 2011 at the Glens Falls Hospital. She was 82. Evelyn was born a gentle soul of a kind nature on February 19, 1929, on a farm on Piser Hill Road, Melrose, a daughter of the late Howard and Gladys Spencer Jensen. As a teenager she attended square dances where she met her future husband Jason Wheeler. She graduated from Lansingburgh High School in 1946, married Jason in 1948 in a Melrose church and started a family on a farm on Bell Road in Valley Falls (eventually moving to Hayes Road in Schaghticoke). In 1978 her and her husband moved to North Easton where she lived until her death. Evelyn started her working career at Behr Manning and the Hoosic Valley School business office. In 1966 she started her banking career as a teller at the former Union National Bank in Schaghticoke, working her way up through the ranks. By the time she became Branch Manager, everyone in the local communities fondly knew her as Mrs. Wheeler from the Bank, as she was the final decision maker in granting a loan. Through her banking career, the bank changed names to OnBank, MidAtlantic and M&T Bank. She was also a member of the Professional Business Womens Association. Before retirement she became an officer of the bank, Assistant Vice President, and retired in 1996. After retirement Evelyn enjoyed tending to her cats, flower gardens, feeding the birds and shopping. She deeply loved her grandchildren, great grandchildren and treasured Christmas as a special time to spend with her family. Evelyn was a very caring person who touched many lives. She will be deeply missed. Survivors include her beloved husband, Jason F. Wheeler, Sr., her five sons, Jason Wheeler, Jr. of Easton, Jeffery and wife Holly Wheeler of Poestenkill, Stephen Wheeler of Cherry Hill, NJ, Christian Wheeler of New Bedford, MA and Leslie Wheeler of Johnsonville, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also survived by her siblings, Norma Fletcher, Donald and wife Kitty Jensen all of Haynersville and Peter and wife Sharon of South Glens Falls. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, May 22, 2011 from 2-5pm at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes, 173 Main Street, Schaghticoke. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, May 23 at 10am. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Schaghticoke.
