Obituary

Eugene F. Smith Jr of Ft. Myers, Florida passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2011. He was born on April 18, 1934 in Stillwater, NY. He was the eldest of 5 children born to Eugene and (Mary) Pearl Cowin Smith. Eugene was a graduate of NYS University and worked for the NYS Sales Tax Department as a computer programmer. In 1962 Eugene married Rose Mahserjian and enjoyed 48 years of marriage. Gene was an active member of a number of congregations throughout his life including, the Stillwater United Church of Stillwater, NY; the Latham Community Baptist Church, NY; The Armenian Congregational Church of Troy, NY and the Ft. Myers Congregational United Church of Christ, FL.. Gene was a member of the North Colonie School Board and the Founder and President of ROI (Residential Opportunities Incorporated) an agency committed to creating community residents for special needs adults. He enjoyed writing poetry and hymns as well as creating counted cross stitch. Eugene is survived by his loving wife Rose and three children Mark (Susan) Mahserjian-Smith, Karen Smith and Lisa (Scott) Ross. Eugenes brothers and sisters include: Annetta Melber- Angelo Delano, Quentin (Laura) Smith, Rebecca (William) Miorin and Bill Smith. Roses brother include George (Ginny) Mahserjian, Charlie (Jean) Mahserjian and Sam (Sylvia ) Mahserjian. Eugene enjoyed 9 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren with one on the way and 1 great-great grandchild along with numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Ft. Myers Congregational United Church of Christ at 8210 College Parkway on Monday, March 28th at 1:00 pm with a reception to follow. Plans for an internment service in Upstate New York in the summer of 2011 are underway. In lieu of flowers donations are being received at the Stillwater United Church- renovation fund (747 Hudson Ave. NY, 12170), the Latham Community Baptist Church (109 Forts Ferry Rd. Latham, NY 12110) the Ft. Myers Congregational United Church of Christ or Center for Disability Services, 314 South Manning Boulevard, Albany, NY 12208.
