Mary Ellen Boyce Scott Ellen Bennington, Vermont - Mary Ellen Scott, 87, passed away Sunday, October 28, 2012 at Crescent Manor Nursing Home in Bennington following a short illness. Ellen was born on September 13, 1925, the beloved only child of the late Clifford and Doris (Bull) Boyce of Nassau, New York. That same summer, Ellens grandfather and father built the family cottage on the shore of Garnet Lake, New York, where Ellen and generations of her family would spend many happy days. Ellen attended several schools as a child and lived in Cobleskill, New York during her high school years. While at the local roller skating rink just before the school year began, Ellen met Paul Scott who became the center of her life. They were married four years later on October 9, 1943 in Jacksonville, Florida before Paul was sent to serve in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. Their son, Henry (Hank) was born while Paul was overseas and Ellen and her new baby spent those years living with her parents in Albany, N.Y. After the war when her husband returned, Paul, Ellen, and Hank moved to Schenectady where they resided when they adopted a daughter, Ann. Later moving to Fishkill, N.Y., they adopted another baby daughter, Penny. Home eventually became Johnsburg, N.Y. during the winter season and Garnet Lake during the warm months while Paul operated the Johnsburg Garage and Ellen became well-known for hosting many wonderful parties for friends and family. While residing in Johnsburg, she became a devoted Girl Scout leader and the girls lucky enough to be in her troop reaped the benefits of her dedication to them. The titles that Ellen cared most about in her life were those of daughter-wife-mother-grandmother-friend. She never missed her sons Little League games, hand-fashioned her older daughters prom gown, and always was there to cheer Penny on at competition horse shows. In later years, hosting the grandchildren at Garnet Lake was a special joy for Nannie/Gram and this will leave all her adored grandchildren with a lifetime of cherished memories. It would be hard to think of Ellen without thinking of the many, many friends she made in her lifetime. Her home always became their home, too, and she will be missed by them. Throughout her life, Ellen was an avid baseball fan. She followed the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees. She was a very skilled bridge player and also enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, and knitting. Ellen would never be content without a dog and a cat as a member of the family and this love of animals was passed on to each of her children. Following Pauls retirement, she and her husband got to enjoy her love of travel and a chance to make new friends. This began a time for traveling in their motor home. Recent years were spent at their home in Schaghticoke, N.Y. Ellen was predeceased by her parents and her beloved husband of nearly 69 years, Paul, who passed away July 27, 2012. She is survived by her son Hank Scott and his wife Bonnie, of Schaghticoke; daughter Ann Arsenault and husband, Gene, of Johnsburg; daughter Penny Baughman and husband, David, of Tucson, Arizona; and son-in-law, Alan Bencs of Highland, California. Her grandchildren are Lance Scott and wife Jodi, Casey Scott and wife Vicky, Josh Scott, Melissa Arsenault Vokey and husband Frans, Bree Arsenault, Kara Arsenault Deese and husband Brian, Leigh Ellen Arsenault and her fiance, Jack Shapiro, Spencer Bencs and wife Nicole, and Travis Bencs and wife Shannon. She is also survived by 16 great-grandchildren: Brooke, Brittany, Zack, Kelsea, Jared, AJ, Andrew, Carlie, Taylor, Riley, Will, Luke, Preston, Kendall, Chandler, and Madelynn. Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, N.Y.
