Hartnett, Charles E. Melrose, NY Charles Edward Hartnett, 84, passed away on November 25, 2015 at home in the comfort of his loving family. Charlie was born in 1931 in Troy, NY, the son of Norman J. Hartnett and Hazel Putnam Hartnett. Known as Buddy to the family, he was raised on Peebles Island and later in Waterford, NY. A graduate of Lansingburgh High School, in 1951 he graduated from the NYS Ranger School in Wanakena. His first job after college was with the USDA Soil Conservation Service. During the Korean War he worked on a survey crew for the construction of the US Air Force Base in Thule, Greenland, 900 miles from the North Pole. Upon return to the US he worked for CT Male Associates until 1964, when started his own land surveying and planning firm in Melrose, where he has worked for the past 50 years. Charlie became licensed to practice land surveying in 1959 and throughout his career was very dedicated to his profession. He was a charter member and president of the Eastern New York Society of Land Surveyors, president of the New York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors (NYSAPLS), governor representing New York at the National Society of Professional Surveyors, and an area director representing four states and the Province of Ontario on the Board of Directors. Charlie was widely respected for his professionalism, wealth of knowledge, thoroughness and attention to detail. He received numerous professional awards including the NYSAPLS Award for Meritorious Service and Pillars Award for Lifetime Achievement. He was honored by the SUNY ESF Ranger School with the Philip J. Haddock Award. In 2011 NYSAPLS established the C. Hartnett Scholarship, which is given annually to a SUNY ESF Ranger School student. He also served as instructor, author and presenter on land surveying. Charlie was well known for his quick wit and sense of humor. He enjoyed time spent with his family and pets. He loved nature and the outdoors and took pride in the numerous trees he planted during his lifetime. In addition to his parents, Charlie was predeceased by his brother John N. Sonny Hartnett, his son Michael Hartnett, and a grandson Michael Skye Hartnett. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Lois Perry Hartnett, his sister Marcia (Willard) Koukkari of Afton, MN, his children Penny Hill (Richard Zazycki) of Rotterdam, NY, John (Jane) Hartnett of Greenwich, NY, and Jennifer (Paul) Molesky of Schaghticoke, NY. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Services will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at 5:00 pm at the Melrose United Methodist Church located at 20 Church St., Melrose, NY. Family and friends are invited to call prior to the services from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in the Elmwood Cemetery, Schaghticoke. The family would like to thank the Community Hospice and the private duty care staff for the loving attention provided to Charlie during his final days.
