Obituary

Brendon Francis Murphy, born on February 8, 1970 in Buffalo, NY, died on Sunday, March 28, 2021 in Saratoga Springs, NY due to a thoracic aortic aneurysm. He was 51 years old. Brendon grew up in Western New York and in Rhode Island with his five siblings. He was an electrical engineer who graduated from Notre Dame University and went on to receive advanced degrees from Colorado State University and Boston University. He worked in his field as a computer applications engineer for over twenty years. He excelled so much in math and science that his knowledge could be intimidating if not for the generosity and kindness with which he shared it. Whenever someone asked him a question about math, engineering, or technology, concepts he loved, he explained patiently, never making someone feel ignorant for what they did not understand. Brendon showed his combination of sharp intelligence and generous kindness since his childhood. As the oldest brother, he would help his younger sister with her math homework after finishing his own. He carried this patient teaching into adulthood, where in his last position he answered questions for semiconductor companies on behalf of Synopsys. Readers of this are likely benefiting, or will benefit from his work in the future, though his family asks that you do not ask us to explain how, because we would need Brendon to explain it! Brendon enjoyed learning languages and traveling, especially to Spain, Latin America, and East Asia. A cross country runner in high school, he continued to run in many road races over the years. He loved outdoor activities such as windsurfing and kayaking. His other interests included astronomy, gardening, board games, and playing guitar. Brendon will be missed by his parents, Paul Murphy of Safety Harbor, Florida and Mary (Putnam) Murphy of Bristol, Rhode Island, his sisters Tara, Kaitlin, and Erin, his brothers Kyle and Sean and their families, including nephews Pablo and Liam and nieces Molly and Sydney. His beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins in both the Putnam and Murphy families hold him in their hearts, as well as friends and colleagues. We will all remember with love his warm smile, his humor, his curiosity and passion for learning, and his generosity. A memorial service will be held virtually due to COVID, with in-person family commemoration to be determined.
