Hill, Betsy Jane
Catskill, Greene County
Betsy Jane Hill, 69, passed away peacefully with family by her side on July 19th, 2015 at Barnwell Nursing Center in Valatie, New York, after a brief illness. Betsy was born on January 24th, 1947 to Ruth (Simon) Hill and Benjamin Hill, Jr. She attended Hoosic Valley School and lived most of her childhood on the family farm in Schaghticoke, NY.
Betsy resided for many years in the Poughkeepsie area and for the past 12 years she lived in the Woodland Group Home in Catskill, NY, where she received excellent care and comfort from the staff there. She was especially fond of staff member Kia who she went on many outings with in the Catskill and Hudson area enjoying "first grade" (what Betsy often joked and called the front seat where she would often give detailed directions to their destination). Betsy was loved by all the staff at Woodland and the In Flight Day Program and actively participated in programing. She was an avid puzzler and loved to draw and color as well as dance and listen to music.
Staying abreast of the latest fashions, shopping and looking at all kinds of magazines were some of her favorite activities. She had a natural sense of curiosity even as a very small child and loved all the animals on the farm when she was young. She especially loved cats and was thrilled to have the company of her cat "Thomas" while living at Woodland.
Betsy loved the outdoors, camping and especially loved eating tomato sandwiches fresh from the garden on a picnic outside with staff or family. She had a very creative imagination and enjoyed good humor and talking and laughing with others. She was a deeply special and sensitive soul who will be missed by anyone who knew and loved her.
Betsy is survived by her sisters Susan A. Hill (Bruce Neddo) of Schaghticoke, NY and Laura M. Hill (Terry P. Hill) of Johnsonville, NY. She is also survived by nieces Laura White Rivers, Andrea Hill Popp (Gregg Popp), Bethany L. White (Seamus Lynch) and Elizabeth S. Hill as well as nephews Daniel J. White and Mark L. Hill. Betsy was predeceased by her parents Ruth and Benjamin Hill, Jr. and her sister Nancy Hill White and brother Benjamin J. Hill, III.
A very gracious celebration of Betsy's life was held in a small memorial service at the Woodland Group Home last week and burial arrangements will be private for family in the fall. Any who wish to honor Betsy should recognize and cherish special needs family and neighborhood members for the gifts they are and keep them an active part of their lives.
