Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County Barbara Joan (Varuzzo) Smith passed away on Friday, May 21, 2021 at the Eddy Heritage House in Troy. She was 87. Born in North Adams, MA, daughter of the late Patsy and Florence E. (Southgate) Varuzzo. She is the wife of the late Leon Smith. Mrs. Smith worked in her family business, General Cleaners in North Adams, from 1947-1967. Following working at the cleaners, she focused on being a mother and home maker. Survivors include her children, Alan (Vickie) Smith of Olivia, NC, Eric (Sandra) Smith of Schaghticoke and Lori (JayDe) Wilbur. She is survived by her siblings; Rhea Cote of Deerfield, MA and Patricia Plagge of Boston, MA. Grandchildren; Heather, Kimberily, Jessica, Alan Jr., Barbara, Alyssa and Eric Jr., and Kayce along with numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Alan and Eric wish to say a special thank you to Sandy Smith, for her selfless devotion to our mother. Sandy was not only a daughter-in-law, but also a daughter, a care giver, and confidant for Barbara. Without her our mother would not have had the quality of life she had, nor the happiness she enjoyed in her later life. Our mother loved her like no one else, and Sandy loved her right back.
