Augustine "Augie" Almela, age 78, passed away into eternal rest on Friday, August 8, 2014 at Saratoga Hospital.
Born in Mechanicville on April 11, 1936, Augie was the cherished son of the late Augustine "Gus" and Mae (Ross) Almela.
Augie was a graduate of Mechanicville High School, Class of 1953. He was a member and captain of Mechanicville's renowned "Whiz Kids" basketball team during the 1951-1952 and 1952-1953 seasons. His humble, selfless character was admired both on and off the basketball court. Augie was also a member of Mechanicville High School's baseball and football teams. Augie went on to St. Lawrence University where he was captain of the basketball team and graduated in 1957.
Augie worked with the Albany Pyramid Agency for many years. Augie's interest in sports continued throughout his life. He enjoyed following local sports and athletes along with professional teams. In addition to his love of sports, he had a beautiful singing voice and was an active member of the Dorothy Welch and United Methodist Church Choirs.
Augie was the proud father of his daughters, Tracy Boutelle (Rob), Audrey Almela (Mike Joslin) and Jodi Monaco (Paul) and the proud grandfather of Ben and Chloe Boutelle, Aliah Joslin, Julian and Ryan Monaco. Augie will be greatly missed by his beloved companion of 30 years, Kathryn "Kitty" Ford and her children and grandchildren. He is also survived by his cousins, Joseph "Bumpers" DeChiro (Peggy) and Dominick "Cheer" DeChiro (Beverly). Augie was well known throughout Mechanicville and he was blessed to have many life long friendships.
A celebration of his life will be held at 6pm on Wednesday, August 13 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 40 McBride Road, Mechanicville. Relatives and friends may call from 3-6pm at the church.
