Adrian L. Filer left this life after a long illness on January 31, 2014 just short of his 85th birthday at home with family members at his side. Born February 5, 1929 in Vineland New Jersey to the late Louis and Florence Filer, he spent his early years in Pittsford on his fathers horse farm becoming an accomplished equestrian. He graduated from Pittsford high school in 1947. He married high school sweetheart, Bettyann Glick in 1949. They moved to Charlton NY and eventually to their farm in Stillwater in the early 60s where they raised their four children. Mr. Filer had a long career in industrial carpet sales both as a manufactures representative and for several area firms. He worked on a broad variety of projects ranging from assisting design firms restoring historic structures such as the Canfield Casino and Proctors Theatre and with just 6 weeks notice, ensured that 18,000 sq ft of carpet was manufactured, shipped and in place in the NYS Capitol Complex in time for a gubernatorial inauguration. He once shared that he had a contact in St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands, where the land around the hotel his firm was redoing was so restricted that they had to store the carpet on the roof of the property 6 stories above the street. He enjoyed his career and retirement on his farm. He was often seen tending his vegetables or on his tractor mowing the many acres he had cleared. He was a student of American History eventually writing two books of historical fiction one taking place in Saratoga during the Revolutionary War and the other about a family member in a New York unit during the Civil War. He loved shooting antique black powder rifles, from 18th century Kentucky rifles to Victorian era single shot Remingtons. Among the numerous awards he received were the Championship Team Trophy at the North South Skirmish Association national competition in Winchester VA and was awarded the 1992 National Silhouette Single Shot Rifle Championship Trophy (Senior Division), at the National Rifle Association Whittington Center in New Mexico. He is a past member of the Old Saratoga Muzzleloaders, the Wilton Rod and Gun Club and The Kayderous Rod & Gun Club. In addition to his hobby he spent a number of years traveling throughout the northeast with his boys who were active in motocross motorcycle racing. Adrian served in the New York State National Guard for 20 years advancing to the rank of Captain of Artillery. He is predeceased by his wife Bettyann, who passed away in 2003 after 54 years of happy marriage. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend Dianne ONeill, brothers Barrett Filer of Rochester NY, Jan Filer of Batavia NY, sister Yvonne Zullo of Palm Beach Florida and his four children: Michelle Koskinen, Andrea Maahs, Jeffrey Filer and his wife Jamie, all of this area and Daniel Filer and his wife Michelle of Alto, Texas as well as four grandchildren (Matthew Koskinen, Kendall and Addison Filer and Ian Filer) The family would like to thank Dr Thomas Cunningham , now retired, and his son Dr Matthew Cunningham for the many years that Adrian was given due to their diligent efforts, the staff at the Saratoga Hospital, Dr Kufs and the Saratoga Hospice team whose thoughtful care was much appreciated by the family. A gathering of friends and family will be held at the Filer Home at 90 Jack Halloran Road Stillwater on Saturday February 8th from 2.00 to 5.00 p.m. A private family service and internment will be held at a future date.
